History is supposed to be a society’s greatest lesson, but American’s just never seem to learn from it, which is rather obvious today.
I’ll start by going all the way back to 1938, when the U.S. House created a committee called The House Unamerican Activities Committee. Hitler was acquiring power with at a frightening pace and the world could smell war coming. In response, The House convened the HUAC to find out if there was any subversive activities being taken by elected, or non elected, government officials in D.C. Their primary focus was finding any communists or fascists who were working in our Federal Government and who were attempting to undermine its activities as the Roosevelt Administration attempted to deal with The Great Depression and prepare for a coming war that most could see coming and no one seemed to want to seriously prevent.
Fast forward to the early 1950’s, Senator Joe McCarthy from Wisconsin revived the intent of the HUAC in the senate, when he began holding hearings to find any communists who may have been working with or within the Federal Government at that time. What ultimately became known as McCarthyism and then labeled “the red scare” by the a new class of “journalists” centered around the a new technology called television, did nothing accept stoke the flames of the brewing cold war between Russia and the USA at that time largely because of that demonization by the new media of his day and his political opposition within the Democrat Party. After 2 years of McCarthy’s public hearings turned up no provable Communist subversives within our Federal Government, McCarthyism was declared a failure and the idea that Communists were “lurking around every corner” of our Federal Government was laughed at and has been hypocritically mocked since...
Fast forward to the 21st century: Under President Obama, John Brennan-an admitted communist (to his friends) ran our CIA from 2013-2017; open “Democratic Socialists” like Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and Islamist sympathizers Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib hold elected positions within the federal government; and domestic terror groups based on Marxist ideology like Black Lives Matter and Antifa, have risen on our college campus’s through a network of communist, or Marxist, professors that are allowed to teach these hateful beliefs to unsuspecting young adults at our Universities. These are but a few examples of the ideological takeover of our government and society that McCarthy was trying to prevent back then, and very few people today, seem to care.
It has been over 70 years since Joe McCarthy tried to warn the American public that something nefarious was going on within our Government and cultural institutions (one of McCarthy’s early targets was Hollywood and the movie industry) . He was castigated and demonized for his efforts at the time, resulting in a “yea right, whatever” attitude towards the idea that our government or cultural institutions could be taken over by people with nefarious beliefs and intents towards Americans in general. The result of the creation of a laissez faire attitude towards beliefs systems literally built to destroy ours, is the culture war and federal governing failures we see today.
If ever there is a time we can learn from history it is now: Joe McCarthy was right. His approach may have been too much for people to accept in the early 1950’s; and it may still be the wrong approach in waging ideological conflicts today, but considering his failure back then and where we have come politically and culturally since, using “McCarthyism” now wouldn’t be enough to rid our nation of the many accepted ideological subversives that currently work within our Federal Government and all of our cultural institutions.
Now that it's way too late, we finally realize he was indeed correct. He did try and I respect him for that. Communists are great at subversion and propaganda. We fell for it, sadly.
